How good of a year is Chris Pine having? He’s been in Star Trek, Carriers, Small Town Saturday Night (2010) and now it’s been announced he will be the new Jack Ryan. Producer Mace Neufeld spoke this morning at a press conference for Invictus and gave a brief update on the next Jack Ryan project (via ComingSoon and Collider) “New management came into Paramount and they said, ‘This is a really valuable franchise. Let’s try to restart it with a younger actor.’ The Chris Pine idea came up and hopefully that’s what we’ll be doing.”

Here’s a glimpse of the direction their going in:

“We pick him up when he’s on Wall Street. But I’m not going to tell you the rest of the story… The Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They’re kind of ‘thinking man’s thrillers.’ Jack is referred to as a water-walker because of his ability to jump ahead to a conclusion. That’s very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that’s why we want to portray him. He’s a teacher, he’s a historian. He’s a linguist and he’s really smart.”

Wait a minute, what? Jack Ryan is going to be picking up where? I’ve never heard of Tom Clancy having Jack Ryan on Wall Street.

The reason no one has never heard of Jack Ryan on Wall Street is because this Jack won’t be based on a Clancy novel, but original screen play by Adam Koxac (with an earlier draft by Hossein Amini). Isn’t this like molding a turd in the shape of a chocolate bar and calling it Snickers?

Isn’t what we like about the Jack Ryan novels that he’s a thinking man’s government agent? What are they thinking trying to rebuild an iconic character? This again is Hollywood’s attempt to make money off an already established character. Sure, we’ll go see it because many of us grew up with Harrison Ford playing Ryan and there are even some of us who enjoyed Ben Affleck turn as the icon character, but will it be good, no. This is a horrible idea even though it sounds like a good one. Let’s remember the road to hell is paved with bad movie reboots, or something like that.

Something’s need to be left alone and this is one of them!
